Devotion – September 14

Join us tomorrow as we continue the Holy Habits sermon series. Tomorrow Dr, Chad Raith will be teaching about the discipline of Confession.

In the morning:

Turn off all technology and take 30 minutes or so to use spend time in God’s Word. You might want to grab a notebook or journal to jot down what God is teaching you in the passage.

Use the Lectio Divina Method on the following passage:

Scripture: Matthew 7:24-29

Preparation (Silencio – before you begin, take a moment to silently become aware of God’s presence with you and express your willingness to hear from God)
Read (Lectio – As you read, focus on the one word or phrase that stands out to you)
Reflect (Meditatio – Why do you think that word or phrase stood out? What do you think God is telling you?)
Respond (Oratio – What should my response to God be?)
Rest (Contemplatio – Read through the passage again, resting and waiting in God’s presence, cf. Ps. 131:2)
Resolve (Incarnatio – Incarnate, or “live out,” the truth that God showed you through the Word)

At noon:

Spend 5-15 minutes in solitude and silence, enjoying the presence of God.

In the evening:

Spend 15-20 minutes doing the Daily Examen.

  • Acknowledge how God’s presence was with you through the day. Although the day may seem confusing, ask God to bring you clarity and understanding.
  • Count your blessings and give thanks. Pay attention even to the small details of the day – God was in every part of your day.
  • Pay attention to your emotions. What can you learn about yourself from God as you review your emotions from the day?
  • Choose one feature of the day and pray from it. Ask the Holy Spirit to direct you to something during the day that God thinks is particularly important.
  • Look forward to tomorrow. Ask God to give you light for tomorrow’s challenges.
