In the morning:
Once again, turn off your technology for 30 minutes. A good cup of coffee or tea and a comfortable chair are in order. Begin with this simple prayer Richard Foster composed for coffee time: “O Spirit of God, blow across my little life and let me drink in your great Like. Amen.” Next, ever so slowly, pray the Lord’s Prayer (Matt. 6:9-13). With each phrase of the prayer add your own thoughts or concerns a little like you are decorating a Christmas tree with your own ornaments. See if your extended prayerful meditation will bring you to the end of the Lord’s Prayer at about the 30-minute mark.
At noon:
Spend 10 minutes in silence and solitude.
In the evening:
Do the Daily Examen.
- Acknowledge how God’s presence was with you through the day. Although the day may seem confusing, ask God to bring you clarity and understanding.
- Count your blessings and give thanks. Pay attention even to the small details of the day – God was in every part of your day.
- Pay attention to your emotions. What can you learn about yourself from God as you review your emotions from the day?
- Choose one feature of the day and pray from it. Ask the Holy Spirit to direct you to something during the day that God thinks is particularly important.
- Look forward to tomorrow. Ask God to give you light for tomorrow’s challenges.
